Through a wide variety of welding processes,
we transform our cast aluminum
and rolled products into complex lightweight components.

The welding processes used at Thoni Alutec are MIG (metal inert gas welding), TIG (tungsten inert gas welding), and FSW (friction stir welding). Depending on the design, we advise our customers on how an existing welded component can be converted into a cast solution to achieve both technical and economic advantages. Welding is performed either manually or by welding robots. Our quality control department supports this department, which performs non-destructive testing such as X-rays and crack detection of welds.

The challenge here is choosing the right welding consumable, since two different aluminum alloys always have to be welded together. The homogeneity of the weld seam preparation on the casting must also be of the highest quality to avoid defects in the weld seam.

We use a special facility to produce aluminum tubes from wrought alloys with diameters up to 1200 mm and lengths of up to 12 meters. Wall thicknesses can be selected from 6 mm to 12 mm. These aluminum tubes are used in gas pipelines, construction, power distribution, and other industries.

The FSW welding process is an oscillating joining process which joins two materials together by stirring under high pressure. It can be easily automated and produces no emissions and creates welds of very high quality without inclusions.

Depending on requirements and technical feasibility, our aluminum castings are welded using MIG, TIG, or FSW welding. The choice of technology is usually made in consultation with our customers. Here, too, welding is performed manually or with a robot.
